Seascape Painting by James Arthur Merriam

Early California Painting by James Arthur Merriam (1880-1951), has strong bold land forms on the left-side which are juxtaposed with the movement and lightness of the waves, a golden glow in the sky which highlights the waves. Born in Canada, moved to Detroit in 1920, and later relocated to Los Angeles. Merriam was known for his desert landscapes and mission paintings so this seascape is more unusual. The frame is of the period and is exceptional.
